Netherlands fail to beat determined Japan

Japan showed real character as they came from behind twice to earn a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in their World Cup Group F opener at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas.

Virgil van Dijk put the Netherlands ahead in the 51st minute, heading in Ryan Gravenberch’s cross after being left unmarked inside the box.

Japan responded quickly, levelling just six minutes later. Takefusa Kubo found Keito Nakamura, who moved into space outside the area before striking low into the net.

Ronald Koeman’s side restored their lead in the 64th minute through Crysencio Summerville.

However, Japan refused to give up. In the 88th minute, Koki Ogawa’s header deflected off Daichi Kamada and found the net, denying the Dutch all three points and earning Japan a hard-fought draw.

Sweden off to an easy start to their campaign

Sweden made a flying start to their World Cup campaign with a convincing 5-1 win over Tunisia in Monterrey.

Yasin Ayari was the standout performer, scoring twice. Sweden took the lead inside seven minutes after Tunisia failed to clear a ball over the top, with Ayari smashing home from outside the box.

Alexander Isak also got on the scoresheet, putting a difficult first season at Liverpool behind him with Sweden’s second goal. He then capitalised on a defensive mistake to set up Viktor Gyökeres for the third.

Ayari completed the scoring late on, firing in his second goal after the ball dropped kindly outside the area.

Mexico off to winning start vs South Africa

World Cup co-hosts Mexico made a winning start to the tournament as goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez saw off South Africa.

An early error from the visitors as they tried playing out from the back was pounced upon by Quinones, who made no mistake with a clinical finish to score the first goal of this summer’s World Cup.

Jimenez then headed in a second goal in the second half, with the 35-year-old visibly emotional as he made his mark on this tournament despite a severe head injury a few years ago, whilst also dedicating the goal to his late father.

South Korea come from behind vs Czech Republic

South Korea eventually came out on top in an exciting second half against Czech Republic in their Group A clash.

Ladislav Krejci opened the scoring from a well-worked long throw, but it wasn’t long before Hwang In-Beom brought South Korea level with some great footwork and a smart finish.

A late goal from Oh Hyeon-Gyu completed the comeback and gave all three points to South Korea.

The World Cup 2026 promises to be full of elite talents, and it will notably surely be the last major international tournament for legendary duo Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Still, we have a new generation of stars coming through, and we’ve picked out five names to watch out for this summer, aside from the obvious ones like Lamine Yamal (still only 18, and playing his second tournament with Spain), and others like Kenan Yildiz and Nico Paz - read on for five exciting prospects you might not have heard of yet…

Yan Diomande, 19, Ivory Coast

The young Ivorian winger making waves in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig this season looks like one to watch at the World Cup for sure. Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain will be among the clubs keeping a close eye on his performances, and one imagines there’ll soon be other top clubs joining the race for his signature if he can take his club form with him to this tournament.

Assan Ouedraogo, 20, Germany

Germany’s large pool of talent will likely make them one of the World Cup favourites again this year with Irish betting sites and others, and wouldn’t be quite the fairytale if Assan Ouedraogo ended up making a name for himself after he was only called up to replace the injured Lennart Karl? The 20-year-old midfielder is another top talent on the books at Leipzig, and if he can flourish in this Germany side then we’ll surely see his stock continue to rise in the transfer market.

Luka Vuskovic, 19, Croatia

Already one of Europe’s best young centre-backs, Luka Vuskovic is a rare young gem in this Croatia side full of veterans like Luka Modric, Ivan Perisic, and Mateo Kovacic. It will be interesting to see how he gets on back at Tottenham next season after his loan spell at Hamburg, but first we’ll see what kind of impact he can make on the international stage with Croatia.

Ayyoub Bouaddi, 18, Morocco

After representing France at youth level, Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi will instead be representing Morocco at senior international level. The talented 18-year-old is a superbly technical and elegant playmaker in the middle of the park, and it seems inevitable that there’ll be even more buzz about him in a few weeks’ time if he can have a positive impact for Morocco, who were one of the stories of the last World Cup with that impressive run to the semi-finals.

Kerim Alajbegovic, 18, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Yet another talent making a name for himself on the Red Bull production line, Kerim Alajbegovic scored 13 goals for RB Salzburg in the season just gone, and is now sure to be a player ready to explode at the very highest level. The teenager is likely to be a key player for Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it will be intriguing to see if he can help the unfancied European nation cause a bit of an upset.

Cole Palmer scored arguably the most important England goal of the past decade. His equaliser in the Euro 2024 final against Spain, coming off the bench in the 73rd minute with England trailing 1-0, is the clearest demonstration of what he can bring to a major tournament. Without it, England lose. Without it, this conversation looks very different.

And yet, heading into the 2026 World Cup, Palmer finds himself in Thomas Tuchel’s danger zone. Those looking at World Cup 2026 winner odds will find England among the contenders, but whether Palmer is central to their challenge or peripheral to it remains one of the more compelling selection questions of the summer. The answer sits somewhere between the Berlin final and what has happened since.

Club form

It is worth establishing first that Palmer has not had a straightforward season at Chelsea. Injury problems kept him out of action in the early months of the campaign, and he did not return to the Chelsea side until early December, meaning he missed a significant portion of the first half of the season entirely.

Palmer has scored nine Premier League goals in 22 appearances for Chelsea in 2025-26, placing him 19th among all players in the division for goals this season. His debut campaign numbers, 22 goals and 11 assists across all competitions, were always going to be difficult to sustain, and a slight dip from those figures has to be understood in that context.

He has also demonstrated, across his career, a penalty record that very few players in the current England setup can match. Palmer has converted 17 of his 18 career spot kicks, a rate of 94%. At a tournament where knockout games are routinely decided on penalties, that is a specific and measurable asset.

April friendlies performance

The two March friendlies against Uruguay and Japan captured Palmer’s England situation in two contrasting halves. Against Uruguay, he came off the bench in a 1-1 draw and immediately lifted the performance, injecting pace and creativity into an England side that had been flat for long stretches. He delivered the corner from which England took the lead, and was rated one of the brighter performers of the evening. That is the Palmer who makes the World Cup squad without question.

Four days later against Japan, Tuchel handed him the No.10 shirt from the start, and the result was far less encouraging. Palmer struggled to make an impact, and lost the ball cheaply to Kaoru Mitoma midway through the first half, directly setting up the only goal of a 1-0 defeat. He was hooked at half-time and rated 4/10 by multiple outlets. That kind of performance does nothing to shift the impression that Palmer functions best as an impact player for England rather than a reliable starter.

The competition around him

Tuchel’s trusted No.10 is Jude Bellingham, and that much is not seriously in dispute. The Real Madrid midfielder will be central to how England play, which immediately limits what Palmer can realistically offer in terms of a starting role.

Behind Bellingham, Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze both look likely to travel to North America ahead of Palmer. Rogers has become one of Tuchel’s reliable options in the creative midfield area, while Eze has been among England’s more consistent performers across recent camps. Morgan Gibbs-White is another name in the conversation, and if Tuchel decides to include him, Palmer’s position in the squad becomes even more precarious.

Phil Foden would ordinarily be another name Palmer has to contend with for a place in the squad, but his situation has shifted. An up-and-down club season and two underwhelming friendly performances in March have raised genuine doubts about whether Tuchel will select him at all. Those tracking England World Cup winner odds will find a squad picture that is still far from settled, and if Foden misses out, it opens a spot, though it does not automatically fall to Palmer, given the other options available.

The gap between making the squad and being a meaningful contributor at a World Cup is significant, and on current evidence Palmer looks more like a contingency than a cornerstone of Tuchel’s plans.

He has the ability to change that between now and June. A strong end to the Premier League season and a performance or two in the final pre-tournament camps could shift Tuchel’s thinking. Palmer has done it before at the highest level. The question is whether he can show enough in an England shirt to earn trust, rather than remaining the player the manager reaches for when all else has failed.

Manchester United look to be moving fast this summer. A deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta is already in place, and they’re stepping up their pursuit of a second midfielder signing.

Mikel Arteta has hinted at some major squad rebuilding this summer after Arsenal’s Premier League title success, with both ins and outs planned to help take this team even further.

As an Arsenal fan myself, it’s certainly an exciting time as the clear message from sources seems to be that the club will seek to majorly upgrade the attack after highlighting that as the key difference between us and PSG in the Champions League final last week.

It’s early days yet, so although I can confirm that big names like Julian Alvarez and Eli Junior Kroupi are admired, I’m still waiting for more concrete information on any other possible targets and any movements being made to strengthen the squad.

It may be that some significant sales will happen first, and my main update today is on one player attracting interest from a host of European clubs.
