Erik ten Hag latest plus the truth about those Ollie Watkins to Manchester United stories

Manchester United had meetings yesterday, but at the time of writing I have no substantial updates on what was discussed and what it means for how the club’s plans are taking shape.

It’s a situation to follow hour by hour as it involves many people, they’re discussing several things after the poor start to the season. It includes the management, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, they’re discussing all together, so at the moment, while I’m writing this, Man United have not made any firm decision yet and Erik ten Hag remains the manager.

It’s also been reported that transfer plans for January may have come up in this meeting, but my understanding is that this will be their topic in December, not now after just eight games for sure.

I’ve also been asked about a story involving United and Ollie Watkins in 2023, as it’s been claimed that they decided not to sign the Aston Villa striker, focusing instead on Ramus Hojlund. My information is that they had multiple options on the table, not only Watkins, but they consider Hojlund a huge talent for the future with big potential, so their number one choice in 2023 was always Hojlund.

Paul Pogba is back, but could be set to leave Juventus

One of the big stories of the last couple of days is that Paul Pogba is set to return to professional football. Pogba had been given a four-year drug ban, but he was always training and keeping himself fit because he felt, in private, that he was sure the ban would be reduced.

And now we can confirm that Pogba’s ban is going to be reduced, from four years to eighteen months. This means that, having already served one year of the ban, from January he can resume training with Juventus; from March, he can begin playing games again, at club level, or for his national team.

However, the internal feeling at Juventus is that they are convinced of their decision to part ways with Pogba. Juve were waiting for an official statement on Pogba’s ban, and now that it’s here, their feeling remains to reach an agreement with Pogba to terminate his contract.

Osimhen and Lukeba to Chelsea transfer rumours - what’s really going on?

I’m aware there continue to be plenty of stories about Victor Osimhen’s future after a crazy summer that saw him make the surprise move to Galatasaray despite the strong interest from Chelsea and other clubs. I’ve been asked about reports on Osimhen possibly moving for just £40m this January, with Chelsea said to be working on this deal behind the scenes.

However, I can honestly say that nothing is happening now regarding Osimhen. I’ve said many times recently that Chelsea’s interest remains and they still like the player, but there are no negotiations ongoing and it would be disrespectful for Galatasaray as they paid important money to land Osimhen on loan. So it’s all quiet for now, and once we get closer to January we will see the developments.

Chelsea happy with wonderkid signing, plus Milos Kerkez links

Chelsea are very happy with their signing of Estevao Willian, as I mentioned here a few days ago, but also with Kendry Paez. I can say there are already some other top clubs around Europe asking why they didn’t sign this boy. There was a lot of interest, especially in Germany from Bayer Leverkusen, who tried, but who didn’t invest in the right moment, and so Chelsea won the race for his signature.

Paez will arrive at Chelsea in summer 2025 and he was already in London a few months ago as he works to adapt to life there. He watched Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and the club are also working on every detail with the player. They are monitoring his progress on the pitch, and also off the pitch. Chelsea are in frequent contact with those close to the player to inform him of everything they want him to do so he can arrive in the best conditions possible for next season.

Chelsea are buzzing for Kendry Paez, they are very happy with the investment they made, it looks like a great piece of business already for just £20m, add-ons included.

Also on Chelsea, I’m aware there have been some stories about interest in Milos Kerkez. First of all, however, Bournemouth are not confirming how long is left on his contract, but it’s surely not expiring in 2025, so the situation is under control from their point of view.

Anthony Martial finds a new club at last

We keep having fresh updates on free agents, with Adrien Rabiot confirmed earlier this week as a new player for Olympique Marseille after finally making a decision on a new club after leaving Juventus, while now there’s also news on Anthony Martial as he’s joined AEK Athens.

Martial had been a free agent since leaving Manchester United earlier in the summer, and he’s now completed his move to Greece on a three-year deal. Martial had been negotiating with Brazilian club Flamengo but his salary was too expensive for them, and so now he’s ready for this new experience in Greek football.

It was a long saga after he left United, with opportunities as well with Como and some clubs in Turkey, but now it’s all done for him to join AEK Athens for this new chapter.

Noni Madueke had chances to leave Chelsea this summer

There were a lot of stories about Noni Madueke’s future at Chelsea this summer, and it’s true that there was at one point a moment when the Blues considered selling Madueke. They never considered a loan or that kind of solution, but in case of receiving an important proposal, it was a possibility for them to sell the player.

Why Adrien Rabiot moved to Marseille instead of the Premier League

The market is still busy as we can see with some free agents, and one major update is we can now officially say that Adrien Rabiot is a new Marseille player. It’s another big signing for Roberto de Zerbi in this ambitious Marseille project, and he was involved in this deal, making the impossible possible.

As was widely reported throughout the summer, Rabiot also had other suitors. There were big, very big proposals from Turkey and Saudi but he only wanted to play in one of the European top leagues.

Mikel Arteta signs new Arsenal contract until 2027

It is official and confirmed by Arsenal that Mikel Arteta has signed a new deal at the London club until 2027. This was fully expected and after mentioning it on my platforms many times, it is now finalised.

Arteta has received an important pay rise as part of this deal because he has done an excellent job at Arsenal. The relationship at the club between the Spanish coach, Edu, the owners and obviously the players, has been excellent.

Chelsea star’s talks with Marseille

Wesley Fofana revealed in an interview yesterday that he had conversations with Marseille in the summer. It was a very ambitious transfer window from Marseille as they brought in a number of major new signings alongside new manager Roberto de Zerbi, and Fofana was one of the other names they tried for.

Marseille explored this possibility and spoke to the player, with Fofana now confirming in public that it was a very good conversation with OM director Medhi Benatia, who tried to tempt Fofana, though in the end he decided to stay at Chelsea because he believes he still has a lot to give to Chelsea.

Of course, it’s not been the easiest time for him at Chelsea so far, arriving for a big fee and then suffering injuries, but now he’s back and he’s fit and he really wants to succeed at Chelsea.

Fofana was tempted by Marseille as he loves the city and the club, but he wants to do well at Chelsea, and also the club themselves believe in him and think the best is yet to come from him, so they were never considering the possibility of letting him leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

What next in the Victor Osimhen Chelsea transfer saga?

We had an important interview from former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel as he spoke on his podcast about Victor Osimhen. He confirmed that Chelsea were really close to an agreement for Osimhen but couldn’t get it done on time due to certain details that were still left to clarify. Mikel also mentioned the possibility of Chelsea reviving the deal in January, and I’ve received many messages about what’s going to happen between Osimhen and Chelsea in the future.

Obviously, for now Osimhen has only just signed for Galatasaray, so we need to respect Galatasaray. Also on the player side, and his representatives, they want to respect Galatasaray, and that is the only focus for now. What I can say, however, is that Chelsea’s appreciation for Osimhen remains.

The latest on free agents and potential transfers

The market remains open for free agents like Adrien Rabiot, who has again said no to Turkish opportunities like Galatasaray in the last 24 hours. There have been many reports, but the fact remains that Rabiot has no plans to go to Turkey as he is waiting for an opportunity in one of the top five leagues.

As of today, Rabiot is also still not opening the doors to clubs from Saudi Arabia either, so Europe remains his priority, and let’s see what happens on that front in the next days.

Meanwhile, another free agent is Memphis Depay and he is expected to complete a move to Corinthians on a two-year deal in the coming days. They are preparing all the documents and finalising the details, then Depay to Corinthians should be a ‘here we go’.

Negotiations are also ongoing over Anthony Martial and a possible move to Flamengo on a free transfer. There’s an interest from Martial, and it now depends on the financial final proposal to get it done. Pedro injured his ACL and Flamengo need a striker, so they immediately got in touch with Martial’s camp to discuss terms. Talks continue.

Manchester United to wait on new signings before changing stance on Erik ten Hag

It’s been a complicated start to the season for Manchester United - they of course managed a late 1-0 win over Fulham in their opening game but have then suffered back-to-back defeats against Brighton and Liverpool. It’s been a very poor couple of games, and an important defeat by three goals at home to their biggest rivals.

This has already sparked some talk about the future of Erik ten Hag as manager, but the club have immediately been very, very clear on this. Both Omar Berrada and Dan Ashworth have backed Ten Hag, and whether this is the right decision or not is for you to decide, not me, but overall I think it’s positive from the club, and different from the past.

Both Berrada and Ashworth have been very public in backing Ten Hag, and also discussing how he was very involved in the planning of the squad in the transfer market. They still believe that Ten Hag is the man to start this new project under the ownership of INEOS.
