Man Utd simply couldn’t afford Harry Kane, plus that ‘buyback clause’ explained

Daniel Levy has confirmed Spurs have a buyback clause for Harry Kane, who is absolutely flying at Bayern with eight goals in his first seven games in all competitions.

Levy was speaking at a fans forum and didn’t go into any specific details, but sources indicate any buyback is not a traditional clause with a fixed number.

If Kane decides to return to the Premier League Spurs will have the option to match any incoming bids. This makes the clause a kind of ‘first refusal’, at least as far as bidding is concerned. It was the same with Gareth Bale when he moved from Spurs to Real Madrid in 2013. But it’s still contingent on Kane agreeing to return, which is not guaranteed.

Kane is very happy at Bayern and if he does come back to England one day he might prefer a new challenge. It’s impossible to tell right now. It depends on how the Spurs project develops under Postecoglou. It’s certainly off to a very positive start.

Kane knew he wanted to resolve his future before the season started. He was also aware nothing had developed with Manchester United so didn’t have that option when Bayern came calling.
