BAYERN MUNICH
For Bayern Munich, it was a blow to lose out on Ralf Rangnick. Xabi Alonso didn’t come, so Bayern went and held negotiations with Julian Nagelsmann who also said no and opted to remain with the DFB. It’s the third no they’ve heard from direct contacts, which is hardly a normal situation for the club. It was so hard, because on Monday Rangnick had already said yes to Bayern Munich. There had been just a few things to clarify, like which assistants he would bring with him and so on, but Austria was fighting hard in the background to keep hold of their head coach. They brought a lot of love and begged him to stay. On Wednesday, Rangnick made a u-turn and said it would be potentially better for his work-life balance to stay put. He’s 65 and is living in Salzburg in Austria. He would effectively be managing two clubs, planning the squad and future of Bayern Munich whilst also coaching Austria during the European Championship in the summer. Rangnick realised it would be too much for him, which is why he said no on Wednesday after saying yes before.
