🚨 All parties feel that Man City star's exit is now "VERY LIKELY" this January
The latest on two Man City players' futures...
Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips now seems highly likely to leave the club during the January transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Posting on X this afternoon, following on from similar claims made in his Daily Briefing column this morning, Romano said that all parties involved now expect that it’s highly likely Phillips will be seeking a new challenge in 2024.
He said: “Understand both City and player side consider Kalvin Phillips’ January exit ‘very likely’ at this point. Kalvin will still fight to play as much as possible in the next two months but his plan is to be regular starter elsewhere in 2024.”
Phillips has struggled for playing time at City, so a departure surely makes sense if the 27-year-old wants to keep his place in the England squad, but it’s not yet clear where he could end up.
Fabrizio Romano plays down Kalvin Phillips Newcastle links
Writing in his Daily Briefing column this morning, Romano played down Phillips-Newcastle links, as it’s too early to know for sure what the Magpies will be able to do this January as they’re waiting to see how their Champions League group stage campaign pans out.
“Despite links with Newcastle, though, it’s important to clarify again that Newcastle will not make any decisions on transfers until they know the outcome of their Champions League group,” Romano said. “Phillips looks like he’ll be an option on the market, but at the moment no decision has been made by Newcastle, it’s too early.”
Julian Alvarez likely to stay at Man City
While Phillips might be on the way out, Romano made it clear he saw Julian Alvarez staying at the Etihad Stadium despite links with Barcelona.
The young Argentine forward only recently signed a new contract, with Romano making it clear that his club are very happy with him.
He said: “One City player I don’t see leaving is Julian Alvarez, despite links with Barcelona. It’s important to remember that Barcelona have invested big money on Vitor Roque and there’s obviously Lewandowski there too. I’m not aware of any contact with Barca at all at this stage.
“Man City have extended his contract as they trust Alvarez, they’re super happy with his attitude, and at the moment there’s no discussion at all internally or externally about the player leaving.”
