Ange Postecoglou does not believe that the majority of Spurs fans will be hoping for a City victory in north London

Ange Postecoglou has dismissed suggestions that Tottenham Hotspur fans at Tuesday’s game against Manchester City will be hoping to see their team lose.

Unless Aston Villa beat Liverpool on Monday night, Spurs will go into their final home game of the season still in with a slight chance of finishing fourth in the Premier League and thus qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

However, if Spurs deny City a victory then north London rivals Arsenal will be able to clinch the Premier League title with a win over Everton on Sunday.

Social media in recent weeks has been full of fearful Tottenham fans claiming that they would be happy to miss out on a place in Europe’s top competition if it meant stopping the Gunners from being crowned champions of England for the first time since 2004.

Nevertheless, Postecoglou believes that the vast majority of the 60,000+ fans inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday will be fully behind his side, regardless of the potential effect it could have on Arsenal’s title bid.

As quoted by Daily Briefing columnist Ben Jacobs via X.com, Postecoglou said at a press conference on Monday afternoon: “You think the majority of our fans are not going to want us to win? I don’t see it that way.

“I think the majority will create the atmosphere they always create because we’ve got a game of football to try and win.”

Postecoglou was later quoted by Fabrizio Romano as saying: “If you’re going by social media, 99% of them will want Spurs to lose vs Man City… but please don’t tell me that’s your world. If it is, you need counselling.

“I understand rivalry but I’ll never understand anyone wanting their own team to lose.”

City have a pretty dismal record at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s men won 1-0 at Tottenham’s new home in the FA Cup in January but have been beaten to nil in each of their other five games at the 62,850-capacity arena.

Manchester City’s results at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

  • April 2019: Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Manchester City (Champions League)

  • February 2020: Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Manchester City (Premier League)

  • November 2020: Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Manchester City (Premier League)

  • August 2021: Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Manchester City (Premier League)

  • February 2023: Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Manchester City (Premier League)

  • January 2024: Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Manchester City (FA Cup)
