Arsenal confirm departure date for club legend who has averaged more than one goal/assist per game
172 Gunners games, 125 goals, 50 assists.
Arsenal confirmed on Monday that Vivianne Miedema will leave the club when her contract expires at the end of the current Women’s Super League season.
Miedema’s final game for the Gunners will therefore be Saturday’s home clash with Brighton & Hove Albion if she is deemed fit to play.
The 27-year-old Dutch striker has been an Arsenal player since signing from Bayern Munich in 2017 and she has firmly established herself as a club legend.
Miedema - who was a key player in Arsenal’s 2018/19 WSL title triumph - will walk away from North London with her head held high after averaging more than one goal or assist per game across a stunning Gunners career.
Daily Briefing columnist Ben Jacobs referenced Miedema’s remarkable Arsenal statistics in a post on X.com shortly after news of her imminent exit broke on Monday.
“Vivianne Miedema leaves Arsenal with 175 goal contributions (125 goals, 50 assists) in 172 games,” wrote Jacobs.
His tweet also included a quote from Gunners sporting director Edu, who said: “Viv’s goals and overall performances as an Arsenal player have been of the highest quality, and she has created so many wonderful memories for us over the years.”
Miedema’s next destination is not yet known but several clubs have shown interest in signing her, including Manchester City.
City currently sit top of the WSL with 52 points from 21 games. However, Chelsea could yet end the season as English champions.
Emma Hayes’ Chelsea are three points behind City but have a superior goal difference and a game in hand.
Chelsea visit Tottenham on Wednesday before finishing the campaign at home to Manchester United on Saturday.
City’s sole remaining fixture is away at Aston Villa.
Arsenal - who currently have 47 points from 21 games - look destined to finish third, barring a spectacular collapse by Chelsea.
