Chelsea defender involved in negotiations with Aston Villa over summer move
Unai Emery is keen to bring the Chelsea defender to Villa Park.
Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen is heading to Aston Villa after the Midlands club agreed a deal with the Premier League giants.
The 22-year-old started each of Borussia Dortmund's games in the Champions League knockout stage on his loan spell there to get to this month's Wembley final.
Last season, he made 16 appearances in the Bundesliga while on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
The 22-year-old, who has played in 12 league games for Chelsea, has also spent time on loan at Burnley, Coventry, and Charlton during the three prior campaigns.
Emery's team wants to strengthen this summer in preparation for their Champions League campaign after finishing fourth in the Premier League.
The 22-year-old Netherlands international is now set to join Unai Emery's team as the two sides are directly negotiating personal terms, despite Borussia Dortmund showing a lot of interest.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano on X, the two parties are currently involved in negotiations over personal terms and the talks are progressing well.
Romano tweeted:
"Negotiations between Ian Maatsen and Aston Villa over personal terms are progressing very well."
Unai Emery, the manager of Villa, is a big fan of the 22-year-old and wants to bring him in before the West Midlands team plays in the Champions League for the first time next season.
Emery recently signed a contract extension that will last until 2029, and he is now focusing on his team's summer transfer business ahead of their busy season in 2024-25.
The defender is currently at EURO 2024 with the Netherlands after being called up late to Ronald Koeman's squad; he was an unused substitute in their group stage match against Poland.
Meanwhile, as Chelsea prepare to lose a talented young player, they could sign another huge talent in Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise, with Fabrizio Romano providing the latest update on their interest.
