Chelsea star Ian Maatsen expected to leave in the summer
The Blues are planning to cash in on star currently out on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
After leading Borussia Dortmund to the Champions League semifinals on Tuesday, Ian Maatsen, a Chelsea loanee, concluded an incredible season turnaround.
Maatsen returned to Chelsea in the summer with great expectations for a significant Blues breakthrough this season following a tremendously successful stint at Burnley the previous season.
But in the first half of the season, the 22-year-old made just one Premier League start, and he was forced to leave in January in pursuit of more playing time.
According to Fabrizio Romano on his X account, the Blues player will part ways with the Premier League club this summer.
He posted:
"Chelsea and Ian Maatsen are expected to part ways in the summer, as revealed in March.
No changes as Chelsea are planning to make profit and Maatsen wants to play regularly.
Borussia Dortmund, very happy with Maatsen.
Release clause: £35m."
The young player's first Champions League goal gave Dortmund a 4-2 victory against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.
The German team overcame a 2-1 deficit to win 5-4 on aggregate, securing a semifinal matchup with Paris Saint-Germain.
The 22-year-old has made 17 appearances since moving to Signal Iduna Park and has contributed four goals in that time.
It is expected to be a busy summer at Stamford Bridge with the club looking to make a number of changes.
Lewis Hall is set to leave Chelsea in a permanent move this summer, just like Maatsen.
Alfie Gilchrist could go out on loan next season after extending his contract at Stamford Bridge.
