ENGLAND
💬 Will Thomas Tuchel be a success as England manager? Have your say in the comments!
Prior to the English national team announcing Thomas Tuchel as their new head coach, I heard there was an idea around Pep Guardiola being pursued for the role. That’s, of course, normal! The idea of Jurgen Klopp came before he joined Red Bull, but indeed Tuchel was already, for a long, long time, on the English FA’s radar. I know for a fact they contacted him a few years before when Gareth Southgate was facing heavy criticism. There were talks and they asked him, if they fired Southgate, whether he’d be open to becoming the coach for the next tournament. At this time, Tuchel said ‘yes’, he would do that. The FA instead decided to stay loyal to Southgate, so Tuchel had to wait. Now you see he was one of the first choices available on the market. He previously signalled that it would be a big dream of his to get this job, which is why it all worked out. It was our exclusive news at BILD and WELT last Friday sharing details of negotiations occurring already - and then on Tuesday evening, we confirmed that it would go ahead. We could write about it because we knew there was already a connection in the past.
Many people are wondering why Thomas Tuchel is starting later in January instead of right now. I think it could be a question of money. He was still under contract at Bayern Munich until the summer of 2025 and was earning a lot of money - €9m plus add-ons (taking the total up to €12m). If my colleagues in England are correct, he’ll be set to earn €6m a year with England. You see there’s a notable disparity there between the two figures! Bayern Munich allowed him to say yes to another national team or club, but indeed they are now having talks about how much money he’ll still get from the Bundesliga outfit. Hypothetically, if he earned €10m from Bayern Munich, €5m from the last half of the year is still missing and you get, in this time, €3m from England, there is still €2m missing in the equation. So, you have to talk about this with your club. In the end, Bayern Munich will save a little bit of money, as England are now paying him, but Tuchel also still gets some money from Bayern. A win-win situation for everyone, you could say!
BAYERN MUNICH
There are a lot of Bayern Munich players at Manchester United at the moment! Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui joined this summer, for instance. We have Joshua Zirkzee, who is a former Bayern player, so you see that United is still very attractive in Germany and for Bayern Munich players who are already of a high level. Leon Goretzka - yes, I think it could be a step for him next summer. He doesn’t want to leave the club in the winter window, that’s his most recent decision. Next summer, if the situation at Bayern Munich doesn’t change, Manchester United would be one of the clubs he’d like to join. He’s currently earning about €17m a year.
