Tottenham prepared to sell 'unbelievable' player for a 'crazy' offer, says former scout
Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero remains one of the club’s most prized assets, but speculation surrounding his future continues to circulate.
According to Spurs expert Bryan King, the North London club holds all the cards regarding the World Cup winner’s future, having reportedly secured him on improved terms during the summer.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, King suggested that while interest from top European clubs like Atletico Madrid may still exist, it would take an astronomical bid to tempt Tottenham into a sale.
Bryan King on Cristian Romero
King emphasised that Romero’s recent contract situation places Tottenham in a commanding negotiating position.
He dismissed the idea that Romero would force a move based on nationality ties with Atletico manager Diego Simeone.
“He’s only just signed a new contract, Romero,” King told Tottenham News. “He signed an improved deal in the summer, and it’s made a big difference to his wage packet. He’s one of the highest-paid players at Tottenham, so it won’t be cheap to get him out.”
King added that any potential suitor would need to shatter transfer expectations. “If Atletico think he’s going to walk out, they’ll have to think again. He’d cost £60million-70m... If Spurs don’t want to sell, then he won’t go unless a crazy offer comes in, that is what it will take.”
Cristian Romero has been an incredible signing for Tottenham
Since arriving from Atalanta, Cristian Romero has established himself as one of the Premier League’s elite defenders.
His importance to the squad was solidified when he was promoted to the leadership group as a vice-captain under former manager Ange Postecoglou in 2023, a move that highlighted his influence in the dressing room.
On the pitch, Romero’s stats back up his ‘incredible’ status. Known for his aggressive, front-foot defending, he consistently ranks among the top percentiles for possession won and interceptions for Spurs.
Romero has formed a strong partnership at the back with Micky van de Ven at the back, with the duo regarded among the best in the league.
His performances has attracted interest from Real Madrid before as well and while their interest appears to have cooled off, Atletico still seem to be interested in signing him.
Given Tottenham’s current struggles under Thomas Frank, it will not be surprising to see the Argentine be swayed by a move to Spain.
