Chelsea have as good a midfield pairing as basically any team in world football right now in Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, but they could be about to make it even stronger.

The excellent Simon Phillips has reported this week on the Blues assessing the market for central midfield players, with Kobbie Mainoo understood to be on their radar again amid doubts over his future at Manchester United.

I can also add, after speaking with some well-connected sources in the industry today, that Chelsea are also thinking more long-term about a major investment in the middle of the park.

Mainoo is one name Chelsea like, but as things stand he’d probably be brought in with the aim of replacing the injury-prone Romeo Lavia as a squad player.
