Future of in-demand Barcelona target will be decided before Euro 2024
The 21-year-old is wanted by several clubs across Europe, including the Catalan giants.
Dutch winger Xavi Simons has only played 11 first-team games for Paris Saint-Germain since joining the French club back in 2019.
The 21-year-old was loaned out to PSV Eindhoven in the 2022/23 season and has spent the current campaign at RB Leipzig in Germany.
There is also a strong possibility that he could go out on loan again next season.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Leipzig would like to retain the services of Simons but cannot afford to sign him on a permanent deal.
Barcelona and multiple Premier League teams are also “keen”, according to Romano, who said in his latest update on X.com that the player’s future will be decided before the start of Euro 2024.
Romano explained: “Xavi Simons and PSG will decide future before the Euros — but PSG don’t want to sell Xavi this summer.
“Also, RB Leipzig can’t afford permanent move.”
Romano added: “Loan move, most likely option — Barca are pushing, Leipzig and PL clubs keen. Xavi will have a say in the loan decision.”
Simons - who has been capped 13 times at senior international level - is expected to be named in the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024.
The Netherlands are in Group D alongside Poland, France and Austria and will begin their bid for European glory on June 16.
Chelsea has also been cited as a possible destination for Simons.
Responding to reports of interest from the Stamford Bridge club last Tuesday, Romano told CaughtOffside.com: “Despite links with Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain will decide on Xavi Simons’ future at the end of the season, conversations will take place in the next weeks.”
Simons has started 31 Bundesliga games for Leipzig and delivered 18 goal contributions - scoring seven times and providing 11 assists.
That impressive attacking output suggests that Simons would be a valuable addition to a Barcelona side that currently sits third in La Liga.
Only one Barcelona player has so far passed the 15-goal mark in terms of league goal contributions this season (Robert Lewandowski with 17 goals and eight assists).
