Hansi Flick waiting patiently for dream job as Barcelona prepare to resolve Xavi future
Flick is looking increasing likely to replace Xavi in the Barca hot-seat.
Hansi Flick is waiting to see what happens with Xavi Hernandez this summer because the German considers the Barcelona manager’s job as a dream role.
Xavi announced back in January that he would be standing down as Barca boss at the end of the 2023/24 season.
In April, Xavi then said that he had changed his mind and that he would be staying for the rest of his contract - which is due to expire in June 2025.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta had been keen for Xavi to continue.
However, Laporta is now considering sacking Xavi this summer - although no decision has yet been officially communicated.
Flick has been out of work since September last year when he became the first ever manager of the Germany men’s national team to be sacked.
The 59-year-old previously won seven trophies in 20 months as Bayern Munich’s manager between 2019 and 2021.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano via X.com on Friday morning, Flick firmly wants his next move to be to Barca.
Romano explained that Flick was “prepared to wait for Barca job as his priority has been clear for months even before Xavi was confirmed as their manager.
“The contract and financial agreement has never been an issue. Flick considers Barca a dream job, it depends on Laporta with Xavi now.”
Two hours later, Romano posted another update, which read: Hansi Flick, just waiting for Barca to inform Xavi soon on their decision to part ways… and then ready to sign in as new head coach.
“He’s only wanted Barcelona for months, not even talking to PL clubs — now ready for his ‘dream job’.
“Formal steps with Xavi to follow.”
Daily Briefing columnist Matteo Moretto added in an exclusive column on Friday: “Depending on the meeting with Xavi, Flick will be manager, as Laporta's decision has been made.
“They will speak with Xavi to discuss the matter, what went wrong, and why they are taking this decision, but it looks to be done.”
Moretto also suggested that Joshua Kimmich could be one of Flick’s first signings as Barca boss.
Xavi has been in charge at Barca since November 2021.
He has so far led the team in 142 matches, winning 89, drawing 24 and losing 29.
Xavi’s Barca won Spain’s La Liga title last season with 88 points.
However, they will have to settle for second place this season.
With just one round of league fixtures remaining in the 2023/24 campaign, Barca’s tally of 82 points is 12 short of Real Madrid’s.
Barca’s final game of the season - which will likely prove to be Xavi’s final game in his current job - will be away at Sevilla on Sunday night.
