A deep dive into French football and Ligue 1 from our man in Paris...
What next for Folarin Balogun after Ligue 1 success?
Folarin Balogun’s situation is really interesting at the moment, not just at club level but also internationally in terms of where he pledges his allegiance. Obviously he was born in the USA so could play for the USMNT, while he’s also eligible for England has Nigerian roots as well, so that presents an intriguing dilemma for him to decide at some point.
What happens for him at club level next could dictate what happens internationally as well. What he’s doing at Reims on loan at Arsenal is starting to catch the eye of a number of clubs, not just in the Premier League but in France and elsewhere across Europe. Ligue 1 has often been known as something of a finishing school for players, so it’s a good destination for clubs to loan players who are looking to make that final step before making it in a league such as the Premier League.
