Martinelli scores late to break Japan’s hearts
Brazil survived a major scare to beat Japan 2-1 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32. Japan started brightly and took a surprise lead through Kaishu Sano, giving them real belief that another famous knockout upset could be on the cards.
Brazil responded strongly after the break, with Casemiro heading in the equaliser to bring the five-time world champions back into the game. Japan defended with discipline and looked set to force extra time, but Brazil’s pressure eventually told.
The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time when Gabriel Martinelli scored a dramatic winner in the 95th minute.

Germany stunned by Paraguay on penalties
Germany suffered a painful exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing to Paraguay in the Round of 32. The match finished 1-1 after extra time, with Julio Enciso putting Paraguay ahead before Kai Havertz brought Germany level.
Despite having more control of the game, Germany could not find a winner and were eventually beaten 4-3 in the penalty shootout.
It was a huge upset and also Germany’s first-ever World Cup penalty shootout defeat, making the loss even harder to accept.

Morocco knock out Netherlands in a thrilling clash
The Netherlands were knocked out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic defeat to Morocco in the Round of 32.
Cody Gakpo gave the Dutch the lead in the second half, but Morocco refused to give up and found a late equaliser through Issa Diop in stoppage time.
After the match finished 1-1 following extra time, the tie went to penalties. Morocco held their nerve better in the shootout, winning 3-2, with Ismael Saibari scoring the decisive penalty to send them into the last 16.
