Friday morning brought the news that Brazilian wide man, Antony, was to be reintegrated back into the Manchester United first-team squad and would rejoin training.
Erik ten Hag hasn’t had the 23-year-old available for selection of late owing to an ongoing Police investigation into allegations of assault from Antony’s ex-girlfriend, Gabriela Cavallin.
They may also look into subsequent allegations from Ingrid Lana, who has claimed she was assaulted after she refused to have sex with Antony, whilst student, Rayssa de Freitas, has claimed she too was assaulted by the player in his car after leaving a nightclub.
“We condemn acts of violence”
Regardless of the same, Man United released an unequivocal statement which read:
"Since allegations were first made in June, Antony has co-operated with police inquiries in both Brazil and the UK, and he continues to do so.
"As Antony’s employer, Manchester United has decided that he will resume training at Carrington, and be available for selection, while police inquiries proceed. This will be kept under review pending further developments in the case.
"As a club, we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognise the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation, and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse."
It remains to be seen how quickly he will make Erik ten Hag’s starting XI given that he hasn’t played since the Red Devils lost to Arsenal at the beginning of September.
Whilst the investigation is a distraction, the Dutch manager will likely be delighted that he’s able to call upon the player, for the interim at least.
