Mikel Arteta's Arsenal break record set by the Invincibles
The Gunners won again on Sunday when they passed a tough test in Manchester.
Sunday’s 1-0 victory away at Manchester United was Arsenal’s 27th Premier League win of the season.
The result at Old Trafford means that, regardless of what happens between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City on Tuesday night, the Gunners will go into next weekend’s season finale with a chance of winning the title.
Arsenal have not been champions of England since the 2003/04 campaign when Arsene Wenger’s men became the ‘Invincibles’ by winning the Premier League without losing a single game.
The Invincibles recorded 26 wins and 12 draws from their 38 league games that season.
After Sunday’s success in Manchester, Arteta’s class of 2023/24 now have 27 wins, five draws and five defeats from 37 games.
Six of those wins have come against fellow members of the league’s so-called ‘Big Six’ - the collective name given to Arsenal, Man United, Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham.
As pointed out by Fabrizio Romano on X.com, Arsenal will end the season undefeated against the Big Six.
Romano tweeted on Sunday evening: “Arsenal are undefeated vs the ‘Big Six’ in Premier League this season. 10 matches, 6 wins, 4 draws, 0 defeats”.
He later added: “Arsenal have also broken their record for most wins in a Premier League season with 27. The previous record was 26, the Invincibles in 2003/2004.”
Although Arsenal have now won more games than the Invincibles, the club’s best Premier League points tally cannot be matched or beaten this season.
The Gunners won 90 points in 2003/04. A win against Everton on Sunday would see Arteta’s side end the current campaign with 89 points.
Arsenal’s highest points totals in Premier League history
