However, the result was overshadowed by the shock pre-match news that defensive lynchpin William Saliba would miss the encounter, compounding an already difficult situation with his centre-back partner, Gabriel Magalhaes, also sidelined.
The absence of the imposing Frenchman forced manager Mikel Arteta to field a completely new-look central defence, pairing summer signings Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera.
While the replacements performed admirably to keep the Gunners in the contest, the immediate concern remained the injury status of the 24-year-old Saliba, especially heading into a demanding festive fixture list.
