Newcastle agree personal terms with Burnley's James Trafford
The Magpies are expected to submit a new bid in the region of £15m.
Newcastle have agreed personal terms with Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford ahead of a proposed transfer to St James’ Park.
Trafford appears to be on the move again having only joined Burnley last summer from Manchester City.
The 21-year-old started the season as Vincent Kompany’s first choice but following a series of mistakes and under par performances he lost his place in the side towards the end of the campaign.
The Magpies are in the market for a goalkeeper to compete with and eventually replace Nick Pope and it appears they have found their man.
Fabrizio Romano took to X.com to reveal that Newcastle had agreed personal terms with Trafford and a new bid was coming soon.
He said:
“Understand Newcastle have agreed personal terms with James Trafford as priority option to become new goalkeeper.
“New proposal to Burnley expected soon, in the region of £15m with add-ons based on performances.
“Man City will receive 20% of the fee from Burnley.”
Trafford starred for England’s under-21 side last summer as Lee Carsley’s men won the European Championships.
Off the back of his performances Trafford earned himself a move to newly promoted Burnley in a deal worth up to £19m, and was installed as the club’s number one.
The shot stopper made 28 Premier League appearances last season, but kept just two cleans sheets as Burnley suffered relegation back to the Championship.
However, it appears Trafford will secure an immediate return to the top flight and an opportunity to impress at Newcastle where he will challenge Pope with a likely long term view of becoming the club’s number one.
Newcastle are believed to be in the market for a centre back and are close to completing a deal for Lloyd Kelly, and the Magpies also have their eyes set on a right winger.
