£20m price tag for former Tottenham winger linked with Premier League return
He made 60 Premier League appearances for Spurs.
Former Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn could be set for a return to England this summer.
The 26-year-old left Spurs for Ajax in July 2022 and has since scored 29 goals in 75 games for the Dutch club.
Bergwijn is under contract in Amsterdam until June 2027 but he could be sold this summer as Ajax look to raise funds to address their concerning financial situation.
Fabrizio Romano reported via X.com on Monday that Bergwijn may be available for a price tag in the region of £20 million.
Romano added that Bergwijn is being watched by several Premier League clubs.
One of those clubs is believed to be West Ham United, who were interested in signing the Netherlands international during the January transfer window.
Bergwijn spent two and a half seasons at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium between 2019 and 2022.
He made 60 Premier League appearances for Spurs, scoring seven goals and providing five assists.
Bergwijn has been one of Ajax’s best players during what has been a frustrating 2023/24 campaign.
He has scored 12 goals in 23 Eredivisie appearances, including a hat-trick in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Almere City FC.
But Ajax will finish fifth - their lowest position since the 1999/00 campaign - regardless of the result in next weekend’s final game of the season away at Vitesse.
Ajax will enter next season’s UEFA Europa League in the second qualifying round.
But there is another European competition that Bergwijn is hoping to be involved in before then.
It is currently unclear whether he will be called up to the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024, having not featured in his country’s two March friendlies against Scotland and Germany.
Bergwijn’s last appearance at senior international level came in June last year when he won his 32nd cap in a 3-2 loss to Italy in the UEFA Nations League.
He scored his eighth international goal during that defeat.
