The decision to not award a goal to Liverpool when Luis Diaz stroked home against Tottenham at White Hart Lane has had massive repercussions, to the point where it’s largely been the sum total of what’s been discussed across the last Premier League weekend.
Even the naked eye could see that Diaz was onside when the ball was played into him, but confusion with the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) and AVAR (Assistant Video Assistant Referee) saw to it that Simon Hooper, who was refereeing the classic English top-flight clash, received a ‘check complete’ notification and carried on with the game, upholding the assistant referee’s initial offside decision.
It was only after the realisation that a mistake had been made did the gravitas of the situation hit all of those working at Stockley Park, where the VAR team work.
Once the match had kicked off again, there was never a chance of reversing the decision even though all were aware it was wrong, because the Laws of the Game as they stand don’t allow for it.
After hearing what the audio themselves, Liverpool aren’t likely to be comforted by it, or what PGMOL has to say about the entire fiasco, and it should be expected that they’ll still want to explore every legal avenue before making a statement.
You can listen to the audio yourself here.
Are Liverpool right to have a grievance? Should the game be replayed? What should PGMOL do to ensure this doesn’t happen again? Let us know in the comments!
