BAYERN MUNICH
It was a very hard fight for Max Eberl, who’s been head of sport at Bayern Munich since late February, trying to bring Jonathan Tah to the club this summer. The 28-year-old centre-back was a top target for Eberl but the supervisory board made it a little hard for him to sign Tah. In the end, Leverkusen wanted €25m plus €5m in add-ons. Eberl was just allowed to bid €20m plus €5m in add-ons. So it didn’t work because of money. Tah wanted to go to Bayern Munich, he was really keen on it. His agent, Pini Zahavi, applied a lot of pressure in the final days of the window to try and make it happen, but in the end, it wasn’t possible. This was also because Bayern Munich couldn’t sell Kingsley Coman. The supervisory board made it clear that if Eberl didn’t sell a player, he wouldn’t be allowed to buy one.
Next summer, of course, Tah is a free agent, as things currently stand. If things remain this way, I think Eberl will try again - I hope he will try again! But Bayern aren’t the only suitors for the player. Barcelona are also keen on Tah. Hansi Flick worked with him on the German national team. Also, it’s worth noting that Barcelona weren’t able to pay this price, but as a free agent, matters would change. Again, Leverkusen will do everything they can to not lose him as a free agent, including offering him a new contract. It’s not clear who his agent is at this point, perhaps he might have changed after things didn’t work out in the summer. The main thing about Pini Zahavi is that he’s very close to Joan Laporta and Barcelona. If he becomes a free agent, Pini, Laporta and Barcelona could very easily make this deal happen next summer.
