Surprise Manchester United legend "had his eyes" on the Red Devils job
Will he ever get the chance to return to Old Trafford?
Manchester United legend Roy Keane is likely to have had an eye on the manager’s job after Ruben Amorim’s sacking recently.
That’s according to former Red Devils striker Teddy Sheringham, who played alongside Keane at Old Trafford in some of Sir Alex Ferguson’s best sides, including the 1999 treble winners.
The former Man Utd captain has not had the best coaching career, focusing instead on punditry for much of his post-playing days, though Sheringham still thinks he could have been an option for the club.
Michael Carrick recently came in as interim manager, and United will then likely look for a permanent successor in the summer.
Roy Keane for Manchester United manager?
Keane is one of United’s all-time great former players and captains, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’d be the right choice to be manager.
There’s no doubt, however, that MUFC have been in a bit of a crisis in recent times, and bringing back someone with a history of great leadership and passion for the club might not be the worst idea.
Unfortunately, job opportunities like this don’t go around as easily as a Valorant Gift Card, so Sheringham probably won’t see his old teammate in the United dugout, even if that’s what he wants.
“Maybe, when you talk about Roy Keane, that might be the situation,” Sheringham told the Metro.
“He was a manager not so long ago and obviously would have had his eyes on the Man United job at one point after learning his trade at Sunderland and Ipswich.
“He would have been thinking, ‘one day’. And he’s been overlooked. So maybe there is a case of that.
“Listen, you could do a lot worse than putting Roy Keane in charge and having that sort of influence over things.
“But having said that, Michael Carrick is in now and I like his manner, the way he is as a person and I think he will do well.”
United take on Arsenal next in what will be Carrick’s second game of this stint, though he’s actually already beaten the Gunners before in a spell as caretaker manager after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in the 2021/22 season.
