Timo Werner likely to re-sign with Tottenham but not for €17m transfer fee previously agreed
Spurs have advanced talks with RB Leipzig over a new loan deal.
Tottenham Hotspur look likely to retain the services of Timo Werner until the end of the 2024/25 season.
Werner joined Spurs on loan from RB Leipzig in January.
That loan deal is due to expire this summer although Spurs have an option to sign him permanently for €17 million, as previously reported by Fabrizio Romano.
However, according to a new update from Romano, instead of activating that €17m clause, Spurs are keen to strike another loan deal with Leipzig.
Romano tweeted on Tuesday afternoon: “Tottenham advance in talks to keep Timo Werner at the club for one more season, extending loan from RB Leipzig.
“New loan deal would be valid from July 2024 to June 2025 with same conditions of loan deal agreed in January.
“Werner, now expected to stay at #THFC.”
Former Chelsea forward Werner is under contract with Leipzig until June 2026, so this loan move may not signal the end of his career at Red Bull Arena.
Werner has scored two goals and provided three assists in 13 Premier League appearances for Spurs.
He has netted 113 times in 213 games in all competitions for Leipzig across two spells with the Bundesliga outfit.
If Werner does extend his stay at Spurs then the 2024/25 campaign will be his fourth season in English football.
He previously scored 23 goals in 89 matches for Chelsea during the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.
Spurs finished fifth in the most recent edition of the Premier League, meaning that Ange Postecoglou’s side have qualified for next season’s UEFA Europa League.
Leipzig will be in the Champions League next season after placing fourth in the Bundesliga.
Spurs are also keen to sign Ukraine attacking midfielder Giorgi Sudakov this summer.
